High Tech City and County Council Chambers

The City of Orlando has recently built a very large, new City Hall to meet the growing city's administrative needs. The city hired General Projection through it's interior contractor to provide all presentation and sound systems in the new building.

The presentation systems include the council chambers, agenda meeting room, public conference room and multipurpose auditorium. Additionally, General Projection provided a 600 speaker "sound masking" system through the eight story structure to provide background "noise" for environmental enhancement.

The new Orlando city hall replaced the old one which was blown up (or down!) during the making of Lethal Weapon 3 starring Mel Gibson. The new 30+ million dollar facility speaks to the artistic direction the city has taken in recent years. The interior of the building includes both modern and classical finishes blended into a unique building that meets the objectives of impressive governmental artifice and small town friendliness.

The council chambers contain a light valve projection system which provides over 4,000 CRT lumens of brightness on the chamber large screen. Additionally, 30" multi-sync monitors provide video for portions of the audience unable to properly view the projection screen. Each pair of commissioners and the mayor have monitors to view the same program as the audience.

The mayor, city clerk, podium and control room each have touch panel remote control over the lights, screens, projector/monitors and all presentation devices which include each major media. Further, each city commissioner may express his/her wish to speak by pressing a button on a custom designed LCD panel at their position which tells the mayor and clerk of the order and precedence of speakers.

The city council members may request to speak and the mayor or clerk (as well as the smart lectern) can control the room, all presentation system components, presentation timing, speaker recognition and broadcast images. Additionally, the ability to incorporate voting is built into the current system.

All systems are controlled automatically through automatic mic mixers and the sophisticated control system. Each of the minor room subsystems can be connected to or from the council chambers in addition to fully independent operation. A separate press room is provided with signals from all possible rooms and sources to allow for integration into their recording devices.

Remote control cameras are used to film proceedings as well as archive meetings. Full video teleconferencing is available in the Council Chambers through the National League of Cities (Washington) which is "multipointed" to Council Chambers throughout the nation.
