Introduction

General Projection was retained to integrate the videoconferencing center at Salomon's (now known as Salomon-Smith-Barney) new Tampa headquarters. During that project the company was contracted with to upgrade the videoconferencing facilities at Salomon's East Rutherford headquarters in New Jersey as well as installing the videoconferencing capability at Salomon's facilities in Manhattan.

General Projection also updated Salomon's multipoint capability to allow the Tampa operations to communicate with New York, New Jersey, Tokyo, London and other Salomon facilities.

Design

The system was designed with flexibility and expansion in mind. Salomon Brothers is a rapidly growing and very successful provider of financial and investment services; as such they required the ability to effectively communicate locally, through the use of the latest in presentation technologies and remotely, through the use of video conferencing capabilities.

To maximize the "bang for the buck", General Projection installed systems that provide both of these capabilities. Whether the customer is using the system for local versus remote functions is all just a matter of which button is pressed. A large screen projection system provides video display from video conferences as well as computer display and video playback from various sources.

Success

The facilities are routinely used for international video conferences as well as local presentations and training. With full time connectivity, Salomon staffers simply step down the "cyberhall" to see their counter parts at offices around the world.

Communications efficiency is enhanced through the "face to face" meetings as well as high-speed data transfer provided. Understanding of presenters messages is enhanced through excellent video and intelligible audio systems.

With such tools, companies like Salomon are spreading the gap between them and their competitors as information and the speed of its transfer "between brains" becomes the most important test of an organization's effectiveness.
