Storage Technologies Corporation

Introduction

Storage Technologies Corporation is one of the quiet corporate giants. With revenues in the billions and a reputation for the industry leader in large, secure data storage solutions, not everyone has heard of this Colorado-based firm.

Their products serve the majority of giant utilities, phone companies, insurance companies and virtually any large organization that needs to store vast amounts of data on site or off. Their storage machines are so futuristic looking, they've found their way into numerous movies (including, recently, A Clear and Present Danger starring Harrison Ford).

General Projection met StorageTek because they were trying to find a better way to introduce clients to their products during client visits to their Louisville, Colorado (near Boulder) headquarters.

Design

What was built is a pair of very high-tech presentation facilities run from a centralized control room. Within these unique spaces (which won awards from the American Institute of Architects) StorageTek would perform automated presentations and interactive briefings tailored for the client being presented to.

The rooms include multiple projection systems, computer interfacing, network connections (which allow presenters to preview presentations before they ever reach the room in which they will be presenting).

All of the systems are run from a central control room featuring AMX remote control equipment, Di-Tech AV routing, Grass Valley signal conditioning equipment and Sony professional source equipment (VHS, BetaCam and recordable laser disc).

The most unique feature of the facility is the ability for presenters to build a presentation at their desktop using thousands of pre-made electronic slides, preview the presentation and then interactively access it from the presentation room seconds later. These presentations include video clips and other streaming data signals to allow for the maximum flexibility in terms of what is presented. All of this is tailored to the client at hand.

Success

The systems are very heavily utilized (several major presentations per day per room) as clients come in and out of the headquarters facilities from all over the world.

Numerous upgrades have been performed to keep StorageTek's presentation capabilities as up-to-date as the products StorageTek builds.

Since these facilities have been built, General Projection has been retained to build StorageTek's newly remodeled Board of Director's Conference Room in Colorado, the Marketing Center in Los Angeles as well as design consultation for StorageTek's new facilities in France.
